Löwenkinder

With the theatre project "Löwenkinder", the author and migrant "self-performer" Nikita Gorbunov sheds light on the remarkable life of his great-grandfather Lev Kopelev. The career of the well-known humanist from Kyiv, Moscow and Cologne not only characterises the personal migration history of Gorbunov's family, but also sheds a special light on Germany's self-image and the relationship between Jews, Germany and the former Soviet Union.

Nikita Gorbunov reworks the biography of his great-grandfather Lev Kopelev and juxtaposes the story of the famous humanist with his own family backstory.

In Boglárka Pap's production, this becomes a collage of theatre, texts and songs about self-images and images of others and the big and small feelings in the face of big and small history.

With the Ukraine war breaking out on the eve of the premiere and in light of the catastrophic events in Israel and Gaza, the evening is suddenly set in a contemporary context. Where the German great-grandson knows no advice, Lev Kopelev might have found the right words. As a peace activist, he tirelessly spoke of a path to humanity.

Following the performance, there will be an approximately half-hour post-show discussion where the artists can be asked questions and talk about the play (moderated by Bastian Sistig, RAMPE).
